Description

The “Narrative” series by Byungsub Kim is a thoughtful reinterpretation of traditional Korean design, reflecting the dynamic interplay between heritage and modernity. Inspired by the rapidly evolving urban landscape of Seoul, where historic architecture coexists with contemporary developments, this series captures the tension and harmony of Korea’s heterogeneous cultural identity.

Byungsub Kim masterfully combines the timeless techniques of Korean traditional craftsmanship with the sleek, industrial aesthetic of stainless steel. This juxtaposition creates a striking visual contrast, symbolizing the coexistence of old and new, and offering a fresh perspective on the enduring beauty of Korean design within a modern context.

The lacquerware used for the backrest is made from genuine antique materials, with each piece featuring a unique design, making every work one-of-a-kind.

About STUDIO KIMBYUNGSUB Visit Showroom →

Byungsub Kim is a designer based in Seoul. His work occupies the space between tradition and the contemporary world, where he merges elements of both to create innovative pieces. Drawing inspiration from antique Korean furniture, brushstrokes in painting, and the modern environment around him, Kim uses steel—typically a rigid and conventional material—to explore new textures and colors, offering a fresh perspective on its potential. His designs extend beyond furniture, transforming everyday objects into immersive spaces that invite both functionality and aesthetic reflection.
