About

Adorno is a digital gallery for the best of design and craft from around the globe.
Selected by a network of on-the-ground curators in major design cities, Adorno’s collections provide a unique insight into the world’s diverse creative communities – and celebrate the work of the designers shaping them.

Each city collection showcases only unique or limited-edition contemporary works, spanning the fields of furniture, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and design art. The curatorial approach varies from collection to collection – just as design culture varies from community to community – but every object featured is contemporary in style, experimental in approach, and exceptional in material quality.

The designers featured include both established names and emerging talents at the cusp of their careers, ensuring each collection is a snapshot of the people, techniques, styles and thinking that define the modern making culture of each region. With each collection launch, Adorno adds a new chapter to the global design story.

Adorno participates in design events and exhibitions worldwide – see the editorial pages for details of forthcoming appearances.

Adorno is an international collaboration between curators, designers and makers.
The curators of Adorno are recognised experts in their local design communities. They might be critics, curators, art historians or designers themselves, but whatever their professional discipline, they have an exceptional understanding of their surrounding design scene and are widely respected for playing an active role in its development.

Whether well established or emerging talents, the designers of Adorno are independent designers or small design studios who are celebrated for the creativity of their thinking and the excellence of their work. Their products and processes may vary enormously, but they are united by the forward-thinking, experimental approach they bring to their chosen discipline.
Adorno’s makers are artisanal workshops and specialised manufacturers with unique craft skills and technical proficiencies. Their knowledge, expertise and passion is essential to the creation of the pieces exhibited by Adorno.

Adorno’s collections are enriched by an ongoing programme of editorial features and content, providing deeper insight into the curators, designers and makers of its collections, as well as exploring the design heritage of their local communities.

Focused features on individual works give the full story of their making, from the materials and practical processes behind them to the heritage and ideas that inspired them. Through interviews, city design guides, maker profiles and trend analyses, Adorno Editorial delves deep into the ideas, individuals and techniques shaping modern design cultures around the world.

Adorno’s principal aim is to establish a global design collaboration, giving a platform to design communities around the world, and a window onto the diversity of contemporary creative cultures.

Adorno seeks to harness the voices of curators, designers and makers from these design communities, recognising and celebrating the fact that it is their ideas – their choices of materials, techniques, forms and colours – that define contemporary design thinking and shape the design culture of tomorrow.

Adorno’s journey began in February 2017, with the launch of its first design collections in São Paolo, Copenhagen and Istanbul. Today, the gallery maintains partnerships with curators and designers in 11 cities worldwide, with many more design communities set to join the collaboration in the coming year.

In the 1960s, the German philosopher Theodor Adorno set out his thoughts about the relationship between art and society in his seminal treatise Aesthetic Theory. Adorno believed mass-produced culture threatened the beauty and sublimity of the arts and fiercely criticised the standardised aesthetic distractions produced by ‘the culture industry.’

Adorno was created from the belief that the market for collectible design plays an increasingly important role in today’s economy of mass production. Inspired by Danish co-operatives in agriculture and fishing, where individuals prospered through collaboration, Adorno has set out to build an international collaboration that champions the work of independent designers, strengthens individual business and ultimately contributes to the world’s cultural diversity.
