The SM1 series (2023) by Luiz Solano consists of pieces made from solid tauari wood sheets and rods. The SM1 series is based on a surface with four supports, which have solid rubber plates glued to their ends. This base measures 40 x 40 x (h) 43 cm, and all objects in the series are built upon it using auxiliary components. Both the base and auxiliary pieces have a simple finish, achieved with sanding and water-based sealer.
The SM1 series includes auxiliary components such as a backrest and an armrest, which are fixed to the base with black cylindrical Allen screws. The auxiliary components are removable and can be interchanged. The base features embedded metal inserts in the four supports, indicating their positions. From this base, one can create a small table or stool without a backrest, a stool with an armrest, or a chair with one, two, or no armrests.
The SM1 series is developed from a common, generic base that allows for diverse associations—both practical and symbolic—through the attachment of various auxiliary components. The SM1 series is part of an ongoing research project by the studio, which explores the interplay between building and object scales. At its core is the concept of form—particularly simple, circumscribed, and economical forms—as a generator of new ways of coexisting.
