Tona is conceived as an architectural representation of the female body, built from the contrast between two materials: hand-sculpted Mexican onyx and cast resin. The designer describes drawing on childhood memories of objects made by their grandfather, as well as a geologist father’s teaching on the properties of minerals — both threads feeding into the choice and handling of stone here.
Mexican onyx has a long history in pre-Hispanic Mexico, where it was used to create religious objects and jewellery; its particular green-toned veining is part of why it’s used here. The piece pairs a studded collar with a light bulb sitting above a pedestal sculpted from the onyx, with the resin adding a three-dimensional, almost tactile quality alongside its own faint scent.
Because of the onyx’s natural veining and the handcraft involved in shaping the resin, each piece comes out slightly different from the next.
