Description

The NAKA Chair is a handcrafted solid wood chair inspired by the balance, proportions, and restrained aesthetic of George Nakashima’s iconic Conoid Chair. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, it combines traditional woodworking craftsmanship with a refined, minimalist silhouette.

Crafted from solid French walnut and American maple, the chair creates a natural contrast between two distinctive woods. The warm, rich tones of the walnut frame provide a grounded architectural structure, while the lighter maple spindles introduce rhythm and visual lightness to the backrest.

Traditional joinery and handcraft are central to the design. Exposed connections and visible structural transitions remain intentionally integrated into the chair, revealing the precision of its construction rather than concealing it. The result is a piece where the joinery becomes part of the aesthetic language.

The chair features low, relaxed proportions and a gently reclined backrest, creating an intimate and comfortable seating position. A long horizontal seat and slender vertical maple spindles establish a calm architectural rhythm influenced by Japanese woodworking and modernist design.

The natural grain of the walnut and maple, combined with carefully hand-finished surfaces, gives the NAKA Chair a tactile quality and highlights the individuality of each piece. Its minimalist form allows the materials and craftsmanship to remain the focus.

NAKA is suited to contemporary residential interiors, dining spaces, reading areas, hospitality projects, and curated design environments. It is a distinctive piece of handcrafted furniture that combines solid wood, traditional joinery, Japanese-inspired restraint, and contemporary design.

A timeless wooden chair where structure, material, and craftsmanship define the character of the piece.
