Command Chair by Studio Martina Dimitrova is stripped of anthropomorphic features, serving as a relic for artificial intelligence: a contemporary artifact crafted from lime plaster, a material that crystallizes over time, turning to stone. This process echoes the ancient tradition of etching moral codes into enduring materials, from hieroglyphs to the stones inscribed with the Ten Commandments. Here, however, the relic serves AI, not human guidance, a set of principles to ground this new form of intelligence as it shapes our world.
The “,” devoid of human features, symbolizes AI’s bodiless existence, a force without form that still influences our physical lives. Surface patterns inscribe binary-coded ethical guidelines for AI governance, created in my signature two-tone style, blending systemic logic with my intuitive practice. Translating 10 essential moral principles for AI into binary, this work forms a visual language for a new era, an artifact for future generations while urging present viewers to reflect on ethics in the digital age.
Working with lime plaster allows exploration of its transformation into stone, symbolizing permanence. This material choice underscores the piece’s role as both a physical artifact and an ideological anchor. The binary patterns reflect my ongoing interest in surface and graphical features, evolving here into a symbolic system encoding AI’s moral architecture.
The chair hints at AI’s origins, recalling when humans first sat before machines and envisioned new possibilities, playing a “god-like” role in shaping intelligence. As AI advances, it reflects the complexity of human intent, requiring an ethical compass to guide its growth. This work is not a warning but a framework, a reminder that, as creators, we bear the responsibility to embed transparency, justice, and fairness values into our inventions, steering them toward a future where ethics and innovation coexist.
The Command Chair is chroma green with various grey tones and mica glimmer.
