The Wrench collection by Iyo Hasegawa is built from offset wrenches, long screws, washers and hexagonal nuts — tools normally used only to tighten hex nuts, here given a new function and character as a piece of furniture that can be reshaped at will. The name plays on the tool itself and on the verbs ‘to twist,’ ‘to writhe,’ ‘to turn.’None of the wrenches are glued, welded or fixed in place, so the piece can twist freely into different shapes, then fold flat again for storage and transport; every material can also be removed and returned to its original use as a tool. Hasegawa sees a kind of beauty in the offset wrench’s shape once it’s pulled into furniture, giving the everyday tool an entirely different function. This lantern folds flat and comes with two lights, including a spare. It runs on a USB filament LED bulb, 2.5W, 3000K, with a dimmable function; the bulbs themselves are made of PET.
