Description

The Kawa Series is crafted using an unusual, painstakingly refined technique unique to Luft Tanaka. Each piece begins as a simple sketch, then becomes a leather mold. After cutting, sewing and preparing the mold for casting, liquid porcelain is poured inside, slowly forming a thin layer along the leather’s surface. Once the porcelain sets, the mold is carefully cut at the seams and peeled away, and the piece is fired in a kiln.The translucent porcelain diffuser casts a warm-coloured glow, well suited to a dining room or kitchen. Custom shapes, finishes and configurations can be requested.Made to order, with a typical lead time of 4-6 weeks. Fitted with a dimmable E26 bulb (10W, 2700K, 1000lm), available as a 120V or 220V fixture for use in any country. Ships with a white 5-inch ceiling canopy and an 8-foot cable, adjustable at installation; a plug-in fixture version can be requested.

Luft Tanaka is a Japanese artist and designer based in New York City. Utilizing his intuitive understanding of materials and processes, Luft creates distinct and covetable art objects, furniture and lighting. His most expansive body of work, the Kawa Series, is the product of a method unique to his practice: the casting of porcelain into leather molds, perfected over years of experimentation and refinement. Originally from Kasugai, Japan, Luft moved to New York City in 2008 and earned a degree in Product Design from Parsons School of Design. Since then, his work has been exhibited and sold at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Noguchi Museum, Tokyo Design Week, NYCxDESIGN, and Milan Design Week—and featured in publications like the New York Times, Wallpaper Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Metropolis, and Sight Unseen.
