Seat 01 by Estudio Material is part of Flat Metals (2020), a series that pays homage to the self-made ingenuity of tools and equipment commonly found in fabrication shops. Rooted in the raw, utilitarian aesthetics of industry, the collection reflects designer Dámaso’s deep connection to sheet metal and industrial materials, which have been a part of his world since childhood.
Raised in an industrial environment in central Mexico, Dámaso developed a fascination for raw, unrefined materials, particularly sheet metal, which evokes a sense of home and craftsmanship. With Flat Metals, Estudio Material sought to create functional objects with minimal material transformation, allowing the integrity of the metal to dictate the design. The result is a collection that is both quiet and expressive, where form and function merge in a stripped-down, industrial aesthetic.
Many of the materials used in the collection are still sourced from the same facility near where Dámaso grew up, reinforcing the project’s deep personal and material lineage. True to its ethos of self-sufficiency and raw elegance, the entire collection is designed for self-assembly, further blurring the line between fabrication, function, and design.
