    Description

    The A45 sofa by Parafernalia was the second piece that resulted from the A45 system, a constructive exploration that focuses on utilizing prefabricated materials, more specifically square profile tubing, which is then rotated at a 45 degree angle.

    The piece takes advantage of the rotated disposition of the tubing to create angles from which the flat backrest and seat are born, which are then mechanically fixed to the structure using aluminum rivets, the cushions are then installed onto the flat surfaces of the seat and backrest. The cantilever nature of the sofa, combined with the angles of the seating surfaces result in a super comfortable seating experience, in part due to the bouncy characteristic afforded to even the hardest of materials when placed in a cantilevered disposition, but also due to the soft but rigid foam utilized for the cushions.

    Parafernalia is a total design studio based between Monterrey and CDMX, formed by Sebastián Zorrilla and Genki Matsumura, which has been formally operating since 2021. The formation of the project was driven by a mutual interest in exploring and analyzing cultural contexts through material discourses that offer critical perspectives, executed in a conscious manner.The practice we have developed has been a process of empirical learning, involving getting in touch as much as possible with the processes involved in creating an object, and the factors that make it such, as well as the processes involved in the narrative development of an idea. All of this has been highly important for the way we work. Knowing not only the production limitations of a particular material but also the systems that govern it, the predetermined units and dimensions already commercially available, and even knowing the physical and chemical limitations of a specific material and how these can be used to your advantage. Our work lies in the reconsideration of scales, in order to subsequently try to articulate within the degrees of freedom that this affords us.
