Description

Derived from the ancient Greek ὑφ’ ἕν (huph’ hén), Hyphen designates the union of two opposites in one; the warm, soft and sensitive porcelain and cold, strong, and brilliant steel. Each piece will be available in several materials and finishes, including chromatic black cast steel, blasted black steel cast iron, and matte white porcelain.
Like every d’Armes luminaire, Hyphen is designed and manufactured in Morin-Heights, Quebec. Staying true to the practice’s philosophy of working closely with specialized experts and skilled local artisans, the porcelain pieces used in Hyphen are made in the same village by ceramic artist Gréta Jonckheere, who used her expertise to help develop the collection. Each collection piece is made individually using custom-made porcelain moulds and is handled with the utmost care, taking several manufacturing phases spread over multiple days.

About d'Armes Visit Showroom →

Alexandre Joncas and Gildas Le Bars set up their design studio to create enigmatic and modern light structures with a singular poetic approach. Nestled in the lush landscape of Quebec’s Laurentian mountains, d’Armes boasts a tight-knit team of professionals, designers and craftsmen thoughtfully weaving in tandem refined, distinct and timeless designs. Extensive research, fine engineering and experimentation in materiality, tension, light and space deliver illuminated sculptural pieces featuring disparate elements that inspire unique emotional responses. Each unconventional design is a mystifying enigma hidden in plain sight, beckoning intuitive interpretation and providing escapism with a sublime celestial intensity. With a world that prioritizes process, design thinking and novelty, the studio cemented strong relationships with a local and international roster of clients, captivated by the unflinching commitment to the rich narrative of light. The constant need for reinvention, the endless aesthetic curiosity and the vast inspirational natural playground fuels D’Armes every day to create extraordinary lighting for contemporary and classic spaces. The making of a d’Armes lighting piece sees extensive hours of work in design, research, testing, crafting, and assembly. The creative space blends new technologies with treasured age-old techniques, working closely with specialized experts and skilled local artisans. The audacious innovative approach to design is on par with the influence of heritage and the firm emphasis on unparalleled craftsmanship. With uncompromising attention to technique and detail, a luminaire is produced with the utmost care using the finest raw and noble materials that only embellish over time.
