The RIA II Chair is a refined evolution of RIA Design Studio’s flagship piece, RIA I, thoughtfully reimagined for an urban lifestyle. Upon relocating to Brooklyn, New York, RIA’s founder found inspiration in the city’s industrial character and stylish residents. The RIA II’s brushed aluminium frame reflects New York’s rugged yet modern aesthetic, while the black pebbled leather and intricate weaving add texture and elegance. Charred oak handles, crafted using the ancient Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, bring an international influence, embodying the Studio’s global perspective.

This luxurious indoor adaptation pairs the sleek sophistication of New York with RIA’s Afro-modernist roots, resulting in a piece that balances comfort with visual impact. RIA II is where continents and cultures intersect, representing a new definition of Contemporary African Design.

Founded in 2024 by artist, designer, and architect Tobi Onafeko, RIA Design Studio embodies an Afro-modernist vision that merges the structural elegance of modernism with the rich narratives of African heritage. Born in the United States and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Onafeko's diverse background informs his unique design approach, which was further refined through his MA in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh. Now based in New York, he introduces RIA’s work to a global audience, crafting pieces that transform spaces into statements of personal heritage and contemporary luxury.RIA’s hand-crafted furniture pays homage to African vernacular forms while embodying the clarity of modernist principles. Guided by form follows function and truth to materials, each piece reinterprets these tenets through an African lens, turning functionality into storytelling. These sculptural creations capture narratives of memory, culture, and place, resulting in furniture that is both rooted in tradition and transformative in presence.
