Description

The Fresh Catch Series by Lauren Goodman transforms environmental restoration into art, crafting unique, functional furniture from abandoned lobster traps salvaged off the coast of Maine. This innovative project addresses the pressing issue of ocean waste, removing debris from coastal shores and giving it a second life as beautifully reimagined objects.

With approximately three million lobster traps in Maine’s waters and over 100,000 lost annually, derelict fishing gear poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. These “ghost traps” not only litter the ocean floor but also endanger already stressed marine populations.

Lauren Goodman’s process begins by collecting traps by hand from tidal coves where abandoned gear accumulates in large quantities. Each trap is meticulously deconstructed, cleaned, rearranged, and welded back together, transforming discarded materials into stunning, one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that are as functional as they are meaningful.

The Fresh Catch Series is more than a design project—it’s a call to action, a statement on sustainability, and a celebration of the beauty that can emerge when environmental stewardship meets creative ingenuity.

Fresh Catch Table I is made from components of abandoned lobster traps with a powder coated finish. Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
