Description

“Vitamin-B12-Omega-3” chair is inspired by the artistic form of classical Chinese furniture such as those in temples and imperial courts. It is completely covered in fine silk, hand-embroidered with the molecular geometry of Vitamin B12 (critical to nerve cells) and Omega-3 (fatty acid believed to be good for cardiac health).

As part of Duyi Han’s “Ordinance of the Subconscious Treatment” collection, this piece is considered a device that records human cultural history. It updates the decorative content of classical Chinese furniture and reflects a contemporary belief in the modern scientific side of (mental) health.

The embroidery is done by highly experienced craftspeople in Suzhou, China. The chair is made by experienced professionals at Duyi Han’s collaborative workshop in Shanghai.

Cover: silk, removable, for light use
Upholstery: foam. Inner cover in linen, non-removable.

About the designer

Duyi Han (1994) is an artist and designer who creates digital and physical environments and objects as perceptual experiences that evoke rich feelings of beauty. His work is based on extensive research on the evolution process of design and aesthetics, with a focus on the “ingredients of beauty” as they relate to society, culture, history, geography, and biology. Using these “ingredients of beauty,” Duyi Han’s experimental practice operates beyond the limitation of fixed style and time period, creating poetic and moving work that is able to respond to diverse time and cultural contexts. His past work has appeared on numerous international platforms, from Vogue to American National Academy of Sciences. Duyi Han holds a B. Arch (2019) from Cornell University in New York and has worked at the architecture office Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland.

Curated by

New Solid is a vision to feel and live with art. It is the first show of Casa Nueva, a livable gallery space and apartment hotel initiated by designers River Valadez and Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens, built on the idea that art can be inhabited. We invite visitors to participate in the dialogue among transdisciplinary works from the contemporary art and design scene. It concerns functional art designed and conceived by artists from two magnificent cities, Mexico City and New York, in a correlation founded in geometry, technology, and crafts. The artworks, bliss for the contemplative eye and a joy to use, will invite the beholder to examine the floating and multidimensional character of concepts such as mass, volume, or weight. The location, equipped as a functional living space, can be found in the historical center of Mexico City. The event will be part of the Design Week Mexico festivities in partnership with Adorno, acting as the international design and logistics platform, as well as Ángulo Cero, an Art Gallery with astonishing designs located in Mexico City, and with the support of Yunuen Sariego, promoter and curator of contemporary art based in Mexico City.
