Description

Sugar O’Clock is a hybrid between a clock, a lamp, and cow udders.

Part of designer Alves Ludovico‘s SUPER SWEET SERIES, it questions our relationship to sugar by using it as a building material — an edible substance reframed as something to be lived with rather than eaten. The series draws on Ludovico’s own relationship with sugar: as a diabetic, sugar is a substance that harms his body, a fact that sparked the paradoxical desire to turn that harm into a constructive material.

Developed with engineers at Aalto University, the pieces explore the physicality of sugar crystals through a new process that alters their molecular structure. A laser sinters a sweet mixture into a sugar-based bioplastic Ludovico calls HYPERGLYCEMIAPOLYMER, a material with mechanical and physical properties similar to soft stone.

Ludovico explores how materials shape the way we understand transformation, preservation, and change in environments and human-made environments. Working with biomaterials for several years, Ludovico experiments with their potential as alternatives to fossil-based materials. Sugar has been a material of choice for Ludovico, with its ability to dissolve and crystallize, which mirrors shifting states of memory and matter. Found objects, marked by past use and industry, introduce layers of history and adaptation. By combining these elements, the work investigates cycles of formation and decay, stability and impermanence. Through continuous material exploration, Ludovico engages with the possibilities of reshaping matter, inviting reflection on how materials evolve and how they shape our relationship with the world around us.
