MILANO is a sculptural side table that brings together Japanese asymmetry and Western symmetry. The tabletop and legs are cut from a single rectangular board, making efficient use of the material.
The design was inspired by the semicircular vaulted ceilings I encountered during my stay in Milan, as well as chairs that appear to be made from a single board, such as Laleggera by Alias.
Designed with an architectural approach, MILANO changes in appearance depending on the viewing angle, its surroundings, and the way light falls on it. While serving as a functional piece of furniture, it also takes on a sculptural form within the space.

This version of MILANO is made from Nagara cedar, dyed using traditional Japanese ink made from soot and animal glue. Inspired by the muted tones and subtle reflections of charred cedar, the ink is carefully wiped away to bring out variations in the wood grain and tone resulting from the natural differences in the wood’s oil content.
The ink’s soot content gives the surface a soft, distinctive texture, while its deep color reveals a subtle blue hue depending on the sunlight. The finish is smooth while preserving the natural character of the wood.

MILANO is made from Nagara cedar, which naturally varies in grain and color. The wood may include both pale sapwood and reddish heartwood, as well as occasional knots. Each piece has its own unique grain and color variations.
