A segment cut from a boxed heart beam of douglas fir timber, the “doug stitch” side table features naturally developed cracks which form as the green timber is air-dried and exposed to environmental changes in temperature, humidity, and sun exposure.
The wooden block is planed then sanded ultra smooth and finished with several coats of clear matte latex. Stainless steel “stitches” are fastened over the cracks in an off-kilter manner, a playful attempt at controlling nature.
Due to the naturally occurring cracking of the timber as it dries, each piece will be different. The artist has no control over the cracks and the timber may continue to develop some cracks over time.
