Microbiome II belongs to ‘Sympoietic’, a body of work by Sabrina Merayo Nuñez that weaves together the worlds of humans, non-humans and technology. Drawing on both modern and medieval techniques, she developed a distinctive recipe for a 100% biodegradable, collagen-based bioplastic reminiscent of ancient paint and adhesive preparations, then used it to build interactive lighting sculptures that respond to viewers through embedded motion sensors.
Within the Microbiomes series, tiny glass spheres filled with agar and roots sit inside the bioplastic form, hosting microorganisms that live and evolve inside the piece. As they thrive, they subtly change the sculpture’s appearance — an echo of transformational encasements found in nature, like nests, chrysalises and cocoons.
Materials include Sabrina’s custom bioplastic, agar-rooted glass capsules, motion sensors, crystals, shellac flakes, roots, a vintage enlarger magnifying glass, a wooden tripod and LED light strips. Microbiome II’s height can be adjusted by changing the height of the recycled tripod it’s mounted on. The lamp can be adapted to work in any country, and ships with a 10ft DC 12V power extension cord and adapter.
