Inspired by antique Chinese altar tables, and Judo, the “Ashi Garami” table by taupe distorts traditional profiles and motifs, namely the “ball and claw” and the “scroll,” away from their original symbolic uses, repurposing them as a series of interlocked stainless steel members. Ashi-Garami translates literally into “joint-lock” referring to a Judo family of grappling techniques. Joined entirely in tension and compression without any welds or screws, the table is designed to be assembled and dissembled by one in less than a minute.
With each act of assembly, the once polished steel takes on a unique patina, intimately connecting each piece with its owner.
