Stine Mikkelsen sees the designer’s role as constantly shifting — researcher, inventor, manufacturer all at once — and hand-produces her own designs to explore paths a factory process wouldn’t allow. Solid Formations No. 6 comes from that approach, part of a collection inspired by Italian geology and built from two composite materials she developed herself: one with marble as its primary material, the other volcanic ash.
The piece’s shapes draw on the forces of nature set against the geometric formations humans carve into landscapes, like the excavated walls of a quarry. Mikkelsen’s wider practice is intuitive, built to speak to human curiosity: by creating textures that resist easy identification of material or process, she wants the object to provoke wonder and open a dialogue with whoever encounters it.
