Shino is a hand-built sculptural vessel whose simple, asymmetrical form provides a surface for the effects of wood firing. Its rounded lower body narrows towards an irregular opening, retaining subtle traces of the making process.
The vessel was wood-fired at 1300°C. Shino glaze, natural ash and direct exposure to the firing atmosphere created a layered surface of soft whites, warm browns and earthy tones. Glaze movement, ash deposits and fire marks vary around the vessel, giving each side a different character.
The work can stand on its own as a sculptural object or be used as a functional vessel for flowers.
Stoneware. Hand-built, glazed with shino glaze and natural ash. Wood-fired at 1300°C. Unique piece.
