Description

The chair embodies the interplay between nature and industry, a pressing discourse that captivates our society like never before. How might we reconcile nature and industry to better serve humanity? A chair, meticulously crafted with a clear purpose, encounters interference as nature asserts its supremacy. Lichens, as living organisms, embody a slow-growing entity that struggles against industry for survival. How can we preserve nature and still serve human needs?

After exploring across Belgium, we discovered a lichen in the Bastogne region that interacts with epoxy. Xanthoria Calcicola is commonly found on rocks or poles along roadways, typically residing on calcium-rich stonework or mortar. When wet, it triggers an accelerated exothermic reaction with epoxy, causing the emulsion to simmer and the lichen to impart its orange hue to the epoxy.

The sculptural seat evokes a boiling emulsion, reminiscent of tree resin, capturing air bubbles beautifully as it undergoes an endless solidification process. The lichen is a rare find.

In a world of fleeting interactions. Where the profound is often overshadowed by the superficial, we celebrate the exceptional. Moments that catch us off guard and hold us in their noble embrace. These rare encounters are the ones that resonate deepest. Blurring lines of certainty. Amidst this uncertainty, you’ll discover the unexpected. Togigi believes design has the power to evoke such connections. It’s the foundation of every piece of furniture we create. Each item balancing on the verge of art, and technology. At our core, we hold a steadfast belief: design possesses the extraordinary ability to forge lasting connections. It serves as the bedrock upon which each furniture design is meticulously crafted. Is it art or science? Fantasy or reality? When you encounter one of our creations, embrace it with an open heart and an inquisitive spirit. Welcome them. They promise to transcend being merely sustainably constructed objects, employing the most innovative techniques. Their goal is to cultivate an open dialogue amid the pressing polemics of our current time. Thomas Van Noten is the sole designer and founder of TOGIGI. TOGIGI is his design atelier.
