The calmest rooms are rarely the darkest. They are lit with care.
Updated on: October 20, 2026
Minimalism has long valued simplicity and function, and lighting is where those ideas are easiest to feel. A single clear form, an honest material and a warm, diffused glow can do more for a room than any amount of decoration.
Minimalist lighting is not about having less light, but about having better light. Below, ADORNO explains how to choose and place minimalist lamps, then picks ten pendants, table lamps and wall lights by independent studios.
What is minimalist lighting?
Minimalist lighting reduces a lamp to its essentials: one clear shape, one or two materials and light that is soft rather than harsh. Look for brushed stainless steel, ceramic, frosted glass and fabric, and for forms made in a single gesture, such as a bent sheet or a turned cone. The goal is a lamp that looks calm switched off and generous switched on. For more in the same spirit, see ADORNO’s minimalist decor essentials and Wallpaper*’s wall lamps edit.
How to choose minimalist lamps
Start by layering. One ceiling light is rarely enough, so combine a pendant for general light, a table lamp for warmth and a wall light for atmosphere. Next, watch the height. Hang a pendant about 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above a dining table, and keep table lamp shades near eye level when seated, roughly 40 inches (100 cm) from the floor. Finally, choose a warm color temperature, around 2,700 K, and dimmable bulbs so a calm room stays calm at night.
Minimalist pendant lights
A single pendant light can define a dining table or a reading corner. ADORNO’s dining room lighting guide covers sizing in detail.

Minimalist lighting, room by room
Living room. Combine a pendant or floor lamp with one or two table lamps at different heights, so light comes from several directions.
Dining room. One pendant centered over the table, or two over a long one, is usually enough. Keep the fixture about two-thirds the width of the table or less.
Bedroom. Wall sconces on either side of the bed save nightstand space; a soft fabric table lamp adds warmth. For reading, see ADORNO’s best reading lamps.
Hallway. A single wall light at about 60 to 66 inches (152 to 168 cm) high guides the way without cluttering a narrow space.
Frequently asked questions
What is minimalist lighting?
Lighting reduced to simple forms and few materials, designed to give soft, functional light without visual clutter.
How high should a pendant light hang over a table?
About 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above the tabletop, so it lights the table without blocking views across it.
What color temperature suits a minimalist interior?
Warm white, around 2,700 K, feels calm and natural. Use dimmable bulbs to adjust the mood through the day.
How many lamps does a room need?
Usually three light sources at different heights: overhead, table level and wall or floor level.
Do minimalist wall sconces need hardwiring?
Not always. Many, such as plug-in sconces with a visible cord, can be mounted without an electrician. Check each piece’s details before ordering.
Why minimalist lighting lasts
Trends in lighting come and go, but a clear form in an honest material stays easy to live with. Consequently, a well-chosen minimalist lamp tends to outlast the room it was bought for.
