Description

The Sword Armchair was one of the first objects made for the Wool Diaries collection. It came from the experiment of developing felt fabric that could be used for upholstering furniture. The material was produced using traditional Georgian felt-making methods learned in Kakheti and Tusheti, then reworked into a new form.

In this piece, felt is combined with Aluminum sheets — two materials that seem opposite in texture and character. The softness of wool and the cold precision of metal meet in a balanced structure, reflecting both the handmade process and a more industrial approach to making.

Around the Studio is an interdisciplinary collective founded by Tika Shelia and Ano Jishkariani, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2021. The Studio explores cultural, social, and political themes through multidisciplinary projects that merge community engagement and collaboration. The studio employs a diverse range of practices, including object design, installation, and relational or video art.  Their practice focuses on transforming objects and materials that emerge from collective actions into functional, everyday items. By reimagining public symbols as domestic objects, Around the Studio creates a dialogue between personal environments and larger societal movements. By integrating local traditions, contemporary issues, and diverse disciplines, Around the Studio seeks to create spaces and experiences that encourage reflection, participation, and collective action.
