Description

The “TM3” is part of the first edition of the “Tube Mutations” series which aims to build a collection of simple and ambiguous objects based on the exercise of designing based only on modifications and alterations of steel pipes. The result is a collection of pieces which stand in an intermediate space between sculpture and furniture.

For these pieces, Rodrigo Bravo F. conceptualized the use of material which belongs to construction and industrial fields such as steel pipe which is intervened through diverse simple and radical operations that allow these materials to be integrated into a new objectual context. The result are pieces that always point to solve a practical operation and integrate a brutalist and concrete aesthetic variable as well.

About the designer

Rodrigo Bravo F.

Rodrigo Bravo is a Chilean designer based in Santiago. He leads Bravo, a studio founded in 2005 that works within different fields and scales of design; such as Interior Design and Architecture, Furniture and Product Design. Bravo’s methodology starts from the understanding of the material and productive environment, complemented with the use of new technologies. This work formula, that constantly seeks innovation driven from common sense, has allowed Bravo to establish himself as a designer in which experimentation and experience find unique solutions to each project.

As Belgium is a small country without a very distinctive, nationalistic pride, artists and designers can work in complete freedom. There’s no higher purpose to be served. Creations can be the most individual expression of the most individual emotion. Thanks to this liberal creative climate – in combination with a strong, historical artistic tradition and qualitative art schools – Belgian art, design, and its collectors have gained international recognition for their avant-gardism. Besides, Belgium has always been a melting pot of different cultures, combining both German and Roman influences. This historical context gives designers the opportunity to colour outside the lines and outspokenly explore the borders between art, design, crafts, and industry. Strict typologies are left behind; rather, banal materials are transformed for a high-end context and meaningful stories are transmitted as an extra emotional layer. In doing so, these emancipated creations break out of traditional frames of reference, open up to everyone, and stand with both feet in our multicultural and multi-layered contemporary society.
