    Description

    Most floor lamps stand. This one reaches. A heavy resin base anchors and a writhing arm, hand-coiled, sanded, and sealed in high-gloss, and at the very tip, a clear enclosure catches the bulb’s light and throws it sideways through the curve. The arm is deliberately uneven; the lamp got there through trial and error, not symmetry. Sits in a corner like it’s waiting for the lights to go out.

    Ryan Mercer is a designer and maker based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working in sculptural furniture and lighting. Pieces are hand-built from resin, foam, and epoxy clay — every leg, shade, and warped detail shaped one at a time in the studio, then hand-painted and finished in high-gloss.The work looks like it spent too long in the sun: sagging, spiked, blobby, deliberately wrong in all the right ways. Some pieces are 1-of-1; others arrive in small editions with intentionally uneven colour runs. Statement furniture for people who've decided the rest of their furniture has been taking itself too seriously.
