Description

Most floor lamps stand. This one reaches: a heavy resin base anchors a writhing arm, hand-coiled, sanded and sealed in high gloss, its very tip fitted with a clear enclosure that catches the bulb’s light and throws it sideways through the curve. The arm is deliberately uneven, arrived at through trial and error rather than symmetry — the kind of piece that sits in a corner as if waiting for the lights to go out.

Specs: one-of-one, in resin, foam and epoxy clay, on an E26 socket with a US plug. H165cm x W71cm. Fulfilment takes 8–10 weeks.

Ryan Mercer is a designer and maker based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working in sculptural furniture and lighting. Pieces are hand-built from resin, foam, and epoxy clay — every leg, shade, and warped detail shaped one at a time in the studio, then hand-painted and finished in high-gloss.The work looks like it spent too long in the sun: sagging, spiked, blobby, deliberately wrong in all the right ways. Some pieces are 1-of-1; others arrive in small editions with intentionally uneven colour runs. Statement furniture for people who've decided the rest of their furniture has been taking itself too seriously.
