Assuming the weight and texture of an object to later find out it is nothing like what you expected is a surprising and pleasant occurrence. The “Sponge” Table hopes to achieve this for its observers.
Made from a carbonated aluminium panel, a common Chinese building material, once painted becomes completely unrecognizable as metal. The sponge table’s simple construction is intended to highlight the use of material, accentuating the alchemical quality of elevating a standard building material to a luxury good. The table is constructed of two raw panels with exposed pores and one top panel featuring a smooth surface on one side.
