The Hashi is a Calacatta Viola marble coffee table, a low round table chosen as much for the history of its stone as for its colour. Its presence is architectural, the marble left to lead while the base works quietly beneath.
Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble from the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy, and plum, drawn with the confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. Every top is cut from its own block, so no two of these Calacatta Viola marble coffee tables are quite alike.
The base is the quieter feat. Two slabs of the same marble are notched and set at right angles, one passing through the other, so the coffee table carries itself with no bracket and no visible fixing. What holds the piece up is exactly what holds the eye: an interlocking cross-leg join, left plain.
Low and composed, the marble coffee table settles a living room rather than filling it, at home in the kind of considered interior it was made for. The Hashi is an Italian coffee table made to order in Cantù, in Lombardy’s long-established furniture district, drawn from full-slab stone, solid timber, and premium Italian glass.
