    Description

    Citiez 0.1 marks the beginning of the Citiez Collection, translating the layered atmosphere of Amsterdam into a grounded and sculptural light object. Inspired by the rhythm of the city’s 17th-century canal houses, the design reflects the dialogue between narrow facades, distinctive rooftops, and the weathered materials that define Amsterdam’s architectural identity. Rather than reproducing these elements directly, Citiez 0.1 distils their essence into a calm yet assertive composition, balancing architectural clarity with quiet presence.

    As a floor light sculpture, Citiez 0.1 establishes the core principles of the collection: balance, material weight, and spatial sensitivity. Its adjustable shade allows the light to be directed with precision, while the dimmable source creates subtle shifts in atmosphere, enabling the object to respond to both space and use. The piece is available both with and without a rotating hinge, offering different expressions of movement and spatial presence while maintaining the integrity of the design.

    Material transformation lies at the centre of the design. Leftover metals sourced from local workshops are carefully reworked and integrated into the piece, preserving traces of previous use and embedding the object with a sense of history. Oxidized steel, brushed brass, shaped metal, and concrete form a material language that feels both raw and refined. The concrete element partially incorporates recycled concrete, while newly produced components provide the precision necessary for the design’s refined construction.

    Through oxidation, texture, and hand-finishing, Citiez 0.1 becomes more than a functional light source. It is a spatial object that carries the layered character of Amsterdam, where time, material, and craftsmanship converge into a new sculptural presence.

    Citiez 0.1 features a dimmable 9V COB LED, available in 110V and 230V versions for international use. Offered with or without a rotating hinge. Indoor use only; not for damp or outdoor areas.

    Niels Stoeltie is a Dutch designer who founded his own studio in 2019. He started in the world of interaction design, where he researched user experiences and developed digital interfaces. During his studies, he discovered the possibilities of physical computing, which led to a lasting fascination with the subtle dialogue between people, objects and technology.After a period in the tech industry, it became clear that his true passion lay in the tangible: objects you can touch, shape and directly experience. Initially he focused on interactive light objects, but gradually his attention shifted from complex systems to the essence of design: the physical light object itself.Because his education did not include any craft-based techniques, he taught himself the skills needed to realise his ideas independently. Through years of experimenting and refining, he developed a deep understanding of materials, light and construction.His work is strongly inspired by urban architecture, industrial environments and worn objects that give the streetscape its character. He works primarily with metals and concrete, but remains ever curious about new materials and techniques. Reclaimed materials play a central role in his work, as do experiments with oxidation processes and the patination of metals.The studio approaches every design with curiosity and precision, and with a commitment to creating objects that are not only seen, but truly felt and experienced.
