Steel, aluminum, copper and brass: the hardest materials in the house can make it feel the most alive.

Updated on: October 21, 2026

Metal decor brings something few other materials can: it reflects light, ages with character and lasts for generations. A polished steel sculpture brightens a dark corner, a copper wall piece warms a white room, and a raw aluminum candelabra adds a quiet, industrial edge to a dining table.

This guide covers the main metals used in home decor, how to style and care for them, and 12 metal decor pieces by independent studios, from wall sculptures and candle holders to a table clock made from a railing.

Metals for home decor, compared

  • Stainless steel: resists rust and can be brushed or polished to a mirror finish, which makes it ideal for wall sculptures and objects that reflect light.
  • Aluminum: light, easy to fold and cast, and usually left raw or brushed; a favorite of designers working with industrial sheet and tube. Read more in ADORNO’s guide to aluminum.
  • Copper: warm and reddish, it darkens and develops a patina over time unless it is sealed.
  • Brass and bronze: golden alloys of copper that can be polished, brushed or patinated, and the classic choice for candleholders and sculpture. See ADORNO’s editorials on brass and bronze.
  • Steel and iron: heavy and architectural, usually powder-coated or blackened, and well suited to wall shelves, hooks and frames.

How to style metal decor

Metal wall decor works best as a single focal point above a sofa, console or bed, where it catches daylight and lamplight. On tables and shelves, group two or three metal objects of different heights, such as a candle holder, a tray and a clock, and soften them with wood, linen, ceramics or plants. Mixing metals is fine: keep one dominant tone, for example silver steel and aluminum, and add a single warm accent in copper or brass. For an industrial decor look, choose raw, brushed or folded finishes; for a softer room, choose polished curves and patinated brass. Metal also pairs naturally with the pieces in ADORNO’s guides to metal vases, metal candle holders and metal sculptures.

How to care for metal decor

Dust metal pieces with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For fingerprints on stainless steel or aluminum, wipe with a little warm water and mild soap, then dry immediately to avoid water spots. Leave patinated brass and copper alone if you like their aged look, or polish them with a dedicated metal cleaner if you prefer them bright. Avoid abrasive pads on polished surfaces, and keep raw iron and steel dry to prevent rust.

Frequently asked questions about metal decor

What metal is best for home decor?

Stainless steel and aluminum are the easiest to live with, as they resist rust and need little care. Brass and copper add warmth but change color over time.

Can you mix metals in one room?

Yes. Choose one main metal tone and add one or two contrasting accents, repeating each at least twice so the mix feels intentional.

How do you hang metal wall decor?

Use the fixings supplied by the studio and wall plugs suited to the wall type. For heavy pieces, anchor into a stud or use heavy-duty anchors.

Is metal decor still in style?

Yes. Brushed aluminum, polished steel and patinated brass are central to today’s industrial and sculptural interiors.

Built to last

Metal decor rewards a long view: it is hard to break, easy to care for, and often more interesting after years of use. Whether it is a copper wave on the wall or a folded aluminum candle holder, one well-made metal piece can anchor a whole room.
