A dull and boring near-futuristic world, Midtopia lies between utopia and dystopia, adjacent to Michel Foucault’s concept of Heterotopia. Early science fiction envisioned a techno-Garden of Eden, but our view shifted instead toward a decaying world driven by wars and anthropocenic events.
Yet, what if the future was neither good nor bad, but just mid?
This collection revolves around a 2052 short story where a protagonist, surviving by selling their memories to a sadistic superintelligence, suddenly contemplates escape from their sanitized purgatory.
Blending digital fabrication with traditional ceramics, this vase is formed in a mold cast from a 3D-printed model, then torn and hand-shaped to balance sharp geometric precision with raw, brutalist texture. Bisque-fired and finished with weathered underglaze, layered washes, and an opalescent luster on the raised surfaces, the piece subtly obscures the underlying clay to leave the viewer questioning its true material.
