Description

The Tabarna Dining Table draws from the sacred nature of communal dining in Hittite culture.

Encircling the table is a continuous band of Hand-engraved 999 fine silver-plated brass inscribed in authentic Hittite cuneiform, developed in collaboration with Hittitologists to ensure historical accuracy.
The inscription translates to the royal expression meaning “Eat bread and drink water.” Attributed to the Hittite king, the phrase emphasized the sanctity of nourishment and the privilege of being able to share a meal.
By engraving this declaration into silver, the table becomes more than a surface ; it becomes a contemporary ritual monument, honoring the sacred act of gathering.

Dining table encircled by a hand-engraved 33-micron 999 fine silver-plated brass band in authentic Hittite cuneiform, sealed with a transparent lacquer coating. Indoor use only.

About MARAU Visit Showroom →

Marāu is an Istanbul-based collectible design studio founded by Selen Türeli Batmaz and Dilara Tokatlıoğlu. The studio’s work explores the intersection of cultural memory, material heritage, and contemporary form. Rooted in Anatolia’s layered history, Marāu approaches design as a medium through which ancient narratives can be translated into sculptural, functional objects for the present.A recurring point of reference within the studio’s practice is the Hittite civilization; one of Anatolia’s most influential ancient cultures. Rather than directly replicating historical motifs,Marāu abstracts themes of monumentality, ritual symbolism, sacred geometry, and authority into restrained yet expressive silhouettes. Each piece is conceived as an object of presence: architectural in stance, ceremonial in spirit, yet refined for contemporary interiors.Materiality is central to the studio’s identity. Marāu collaborates closely with master artisans across Turkey, integrating hand-engraved brass elements finished with a 33-micron layer of 999 fine silver plating, hand-carved Mardin stone, and meticulously lacquered veneered surfaces. Through these collaborations, the studio supports the continuity of traditional craftsmanship while repositioning it within a collectible design context. Both founders come from multidisciplinary backgrounds that bridge design thinking, cultural research, and entrepreneurial practice. This combination informs a process that is conceptually grounded yet technically precise. Limited editions and handcrafted production ensure that each work carries subtle variations, reinforcing its individuality and authenticity. At its core, Marāu is concerned with creating contemporary heirlooms; pieces that embody cultural continuity while engaging confidently with the international language of collectible design.
