Description

Simple yet seductive wooden form that provokes interaction; it is tactile and inviting. The object associates itself with a church Pew, and more broadly with religious ceremony amongst the monumental wall of Gothic architecture. Sitting on this bench may provoke a question of importance with religion and spirituality in modernity. Douglas Fir was used for this production, which was offered by a local wood Yard. This material did not align with furniture industry standards, and was considered as low-quality. The Shou Sugi Ban technique helped treat the surface and expose natural wooden relief, simultaneously building a powerful context. The object embraces minimalist harmony, constituted in natural material. Ordinary bench in form, yet aspires to a different object category.

About StorqueStudios Visit Showroom →

KavczuK, Wojtek Kawczyk is the maker behind StorqueStudios, a mikro design practice based in London/Tottenham. Wojtek primarily works with wood waste and the revitalisation of ‘unwanted’ objects. He is focused on the principle of circular economy; working collaboratively with other makers, he captures available construction materials to understand it's inherent properties. Studying the navigation of form and behaviour becomes inspiration for new projects. His aim is to challenge the design discipline, by bringing unconventional solutions to the ‘table’. Through waste management, his practice opens up new studies of materials through function and form. Wojtek is currently working on a short series of furniture that is predestinated for bigger production scale... he believes that contemporary design should be utilitarian and accessible. Production of new original forms such as furniture/ with a built- in circular economy "module" can change the order of consumerism and define a new aesthetic!
