    The chair that started everything. I sketched this seven years ago and spent six of those years failing to actually build it. The seventh year went better. Butter Chair is a soft, lumpy, mildly-overripe form in high-gloss butter yellow with hand-painted dots — you can read it as a chair that’s slumped or one that’s mid-exhale, depending on how your day’s going. 1-of-1 per because it’s still a pain to make, and I’m still just one person.

    Ryan Mercer is a designer and maker based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working in sculptural furniture and lighting. Pieces are hand-built from resin, foam, and epoxy clay — every leg, shade, and warped detail shaped one at a time in the studio, then hand-painted and finished in high-gloss.The work looks like it spent too long in the sun: sagging, spiked, blobby, deliberately wrong in all the right ways. Some pieces are 1-of-1; others arrive in small editions with intentionally uneven colour runs. Statement furniture for people who've decided the rest of their furniture has been taking itself too seriously.
