Baleine is a side table carved from solid ash, its form evoking a whale’s tail as it breaks the surface of the water. Two asymmetrical tabletops extend from a single sculptural base at different heights, lending the composition a sense of movement. Their softly contoured lines flow seamlessly from the central body.
The sculpted silhouette develops from a base that widens towards the bottom, through a slender waist, to two tabletops with distinct outlines. Their asymmetry and varying heights lend the composition a sense of lightness, as if the object were suspended between submersion and ascent. The marine inspiration is expressed through the table’s proportions and geometry rather than a literal reproduction of a natural form.
Carved from solid ash, Baleine combines everyday function with a sculptural approach to wood. Its two levels provide separate usable surfaces, while its distinctive silhouette allows the table to stand as a sculptural object in its own right.
