The Sherman is a travertine and oak side table offered in two pairings, a low round table in which a full slab of stone leads and a solid oak base carries it. The stone sets the tone, and the oak answers it.
In the first pairing, Roman travertine meets solid oak. Roman travertine is the stone of ancient Rome, formed in the mineral springs around Tivoli, its creamy beige ground softly layered and warm; beneath it, solid oak in a honey tone, open-grained, so warm stone and warm wood settle into one register. The second pairing runs cooler: Titanium travertine, banded from silver through to charcoal, set over smoked oak darkened to a deep brown with the grain still legible. Either way the travertine and oak are cut and finished to sit together as a single considered pairing, the stone above and the timber below.
The oak does the work of holding the stone up. Two solid oak boards are notched at right angles and slotted one through the other into a self-supporting cross-leg base, the join shown rather than concealed, so the structure of the side table and its one gesture of craft are the same thing. Stone meets wood with nothing worked in between.
