Gravel is built entirely from quartz, the most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust — essentially the same material as beach sand, just with a larger grain. That abundance was the actual starting point for the piece: an exploration of what could be made from something so common. Nine kilograms of stone go into a single column.
Studio Guilty designed it to hold a bold, strong stature wherever it’s placed — a two-person restaurant table, a hotel counter, a dresser, or wedged between books on a shelf — with its round profile reflecting the studio’s ongoing interest in the intersection of round shapes.
