    Solid Black Stone Side Table – Bent Series in Cast stone by Donatas Zukauskas

    A stone-look side table organised around a single arched leg — a shape that feels both ancient and thoroughly modern. The outline is bold and stripped-back; the surface does the subtler work, all raw, geological texture. It is less a place to set a cup than a functional sculpture that quietly takes over a room.

    The composite behind it grew out of years of hands-on trials — recycled paper pulp and cardboard, the second life of wood, bound with organic cement, binders, and paint into something that looks like cast stone but acts nothing like it. Far lighter than poured concrete, it flexes a little rather than snapping, and it is sealed for years of indoor use. Donatas calls the result the third life of wood: an ordinary material remade, through process, into something new.

    Far from smoothing them away, the BENT table keeps the marks of its making on show. Cracks, shifts, and unpredictable variation are built in — the trace of a hand and of a material left to speak. Imperfection as a way to create beauty.

    "Imperfection as a way to create beauty". Cracks, splits, random spots and unpredictable results in a sculptural plastic form, such imperfection fascinates me, I strive for it in almost all my works.I am an interior designer and creator of interior details from Lithuania. I have been creating sculptural interior objects for more than 15 years, combining sculpture, design and artistry. I create side and coffee tables, lamps, vases, sculptures and candle lanterns.I use a concrete-like material, which is the result of various experiments. It is a mixture of several components: the largest part is paper pulp. Although paper is often associated with fragility, when mixed with other materials and dried it becomes as strong as wood, it resembles concrete but is slightly elastic, so it does not split or crumble. It took a lot of testing to find the right ratio of materials to create a rough or smooth surface, water resistance, rigidity, and elasticity. By using paper in my works, I give it the properties of wood again: natural texture, strength. It's like giving a tree a new life. This is the third tree life.
