Sam Later is a Montreal-based furniture designer and maker working at the intersection of fiction and physical form. His practice, Form Follows Fiction, translates the emotional language of cinematic and literary universes into collectible furniture pieces produced as singular works or in very limited series.
His background in cinema, industrial design, and woodworking directly shaped the way he approaches each piece.

The central question driving his work is whether an object can create the same kind of connection that a shared cultural reference does between two people. His observation, repeated across many conversations, is that a common reference to a film or a manga can dissolve the distance between strangers in seconds. Not because of the discussion that follows, but because of the mutual recognition of a memory each person believed they carried alone.

This shapes every design decision. A piece needs to function independently of its source. The form has to exist on its own terms. But for someone who recognizes the reference, the object adds another layer. It surfaces a positive memory. It starts a conversation.
