Vase 1, crafted from wood sourced from an 1800s cathedral in Philadelphia, pairs a hand-carved wooden base with a slip-on paper-and-bamboo vessel, balancing delicacy with permanence. Its hollow skeletal form holds light and air, while the solid base grounds it—creating a quiet harmony between void and mass.
The palette draws inspiration from the movement of goldfish in water: deep reds and soft ink-like hues that blur and shift in fluid motion, carrying both the tenderness of impermanence and the quiet resilience of a living form.
Inspired by traditional Chinese lantern- and kite-making techniques, the hand-painted paper shade is structured with bamboo and coated in shellac, a natural resin secreted by insects, offering subtle protection and water resistance. The inner wood base is sealed with resin and fully waterproof. While the piece can accommodate occasional use with watered plants, it is best suited for dry flowers to preserve its delicate materials over time. Hand-painted and carved, the pattern and color of each edition of Vessel I will be slightly different and making it a unique collectible piece.
