Description

“Together and Apart” is an international patent-pending, modular multipurpose furniture system for residential, hospitality, and workplace use. The blocks serve and challenge the imagination and physical needs of their users. Two wedges interlock at saw-toothed surfaces, allowing them to fit together at any of many levels. This allows the user to create furniture in a wide range of adjustable heights and shapes.

More than two wedges can be combined, making for a nearly limitless range of options for chairs, benches, booster seats for kids, side tables, laptop desks, coffee tables, lounges, nightstands, and more.

With their non-specified use, the blocks create tension and encourage interaction. The tension created can either be within a single individual’s interaction with the blocks as he or she decides how to combine them, or it can manifest itself between individuals adding blocks to the same grouping or separating blocks to create a personal (detached) furniture/sculpture arrangement.

These blocks are on a made-to-order basis. These particular version is made of solid cork.
Custom finishes and materials are available upon request.

About the designer

Bjarke Ballisager is a designer and architect based in Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, he has an M.Arch. from the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and has worked for architecture, digital fabrication and design/build firms in both Copenhagen and New York City. While apprenticing with a Copenhagen violinmaker for several years, Bjarke developed a profound interest in fine craftsmanship, material properties, and the tactile experience of our interactions with objects and the built environment. These interests play an important role in his product, furniture, and architectural design work today, as does a lifelong strong belief in the importance of social and environmental sustainability.

Curated by

New Solid is a vision to feel and live with art. It is the first show of Casa Nueva, a livable gallery space and apartment hotel initiated by designers River Valadez and Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens, built on the idea that art can be inhabited. We invite visitors to participate in the dialogue among transdisciplinary works from the contemporary art and design scene. It concerns functional art designed and conceived by artists from two magnificent cities, Mexico City and New York, in a correlation founded in geometry, technology, and crafts. The artworks, bliss for the contemplative eye and a joy to use, will invite the beholder to examine the floating and multidimensional character of concepts such as mass, volume, or weight. The location, equipped as a functional living space, can be found in the historical center of Mexico City. The event will be part of the Design Week Mexico festivities in partnership with Adorno, acting as the international design and logistics platform, as well as Ángulo Cero, an Art Gallery with astonishing designs located in Mexico City, and with the support of Yunuen Sariego, promoter and curator of contemporary art based in Mexico City.
