Description

The Subcurrent is a unique hand-built ceramic sculpture from Stella Arion’s stoneware series exploring pressure, movement and material transformation.
The work is conceived as an autonomous sculptural object rather than a functional vessel. Its vertical form appears to rise from a compact base into an open, asymmetrical upper structure, creating a sense of quiet internal movement. Soft folds, compressed surfaces and uneven edges give the piece a dynamic presence, while the open interior adds depth and visual rhythm.
Built by hand using coiling, The Subcurrent carries subtle traces of touch, pressure and material adjustment. The sculpture is made from stoneware and finished with industrial glazes developed through extensive testing. Its surface moves between deep black, metallic reflection and textured shadow, giving the work a layered and tactile material quality.
As a collectible design object, The Subcurrent can be placed as an independent sculptural piece on a plinth, console, shelf or architectural surface. It is a unique piece.

About Ceramic Sculptor Stella Arion Visit Showroom →

Stella Arion is a London-based ceramic sculptor whose work sits between contemporary sculpture, collectible design and material research. Working primarily with black stoneware and industrial glazes, she creates hand-built sculptural objects that explore pressure, distortion and the body as a site of structural tension.Her forms are not conceived as functional vessels, but as autonomous objects shaped by force, memory and material resistance. Each piece is built by hand, using coiling and experimental surface processes developed through extensive testing. Research is central to her practice and often takes place on site, through residencies, fieldwork and direct encounters with specific landscapes, materials and environments.Arion’s practice has developed through two interconnected strands of research: specialist ceramic residencies, where material knowledge and technical processes are expanded and field-based residencies in remote natural environments, where landscape, geological pressure and bodily experience become sources for sculptural language.Across her practice, black is not treated as a flat colour, but as a complex condition of depth, rupture and self-reflection. Arion holds an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art, London and is a recipient of the Charlotte Fraser Award.
