This piece is part of the Modern Ancestors collection, a series of handmade sculptural vessels all featuring an ultramarine blue lava glaze, which, surprisingly, reveals small spots of gold where the glaze breaks to reveal the clay body underneath.
The collection was born out of an inherent feeling of both nowness and timelessness. As the collection grew, the pieces belonged together as a family and had a compelling presence. They quickly embodied a desire to hold space for something old that might resurface and be remembered – not only on the personal plane, but also on the ancestral and collective one.
The pieces are built using a mixture of traditional wheel-work and hand building techniques. The collection is an ongoing research into shapes as well as the variations of the blue glaze, which behaves differently depending on its thickness and method of application.
