Description

The “Minute” candle holders get their name from the short production time used to create the pieces, each piece is hand shaped in one minute. The idea behind the product came about from Flétta’s focus on mass production and the fact that Icelanders produce many items abroad.

Flétta was inspired to find a way to lessen production time in order to make it more affordable to produce handcrafted products locally. Therefore, the studio developed a way to shape these candle holders in one minute.

With the “Minute” project, Flétta seeks to embrace craftsmanship and the charm of handmade objects. The method used in forming the candleholders in only one minute makes the hand of the craftsman a visible part of the final piece.

About the designer

Designers Birta Rós Brynjólfsdóttir and Hrefna Sigurðardóttir founded Flétta in 2017 but have been working together since 2014. Both with backgrounds in product design from the Iceland University of the Arts, they bring a high degree of conceptual and process innovation to their works using mundane or often overlooked products and materials. Their practice revolves around responsible design, utilizing reused materials and local production with an evident respect for craftsmanship and storytelling. Flétta’s works include Denim on denim on denim on denim, a collaboration with fashion designer, Steinunn Eyja Halldórsdóttir and the Red Cross of Iceland to address the yearly 2000 tonnes of textiles exported by the Red Cross to be recycled, while the country imports 3800 tonnes of textile a year. This level of social commitment has been extended with Minute, a line of candlestick holders where each piece is shaped by hand from the slab of clay in only one minute, to ensure a local production resulting in an affordable product.
