Description

The Mabo plate looks as if it is made from marble, but it is made entirely from recycled plastic food containers.

ecoBirdy has developed a technique that allows the reclaimed plastic to be an integral part of the production process; its authentic characteristics organically form a vein-like pattern. The resulting tableware is a stylish embellishment to dining.

Merging aesthetics and functionality, the plate shape has been designed to be pleasant to use. A raised curved edge keeps the food from sliding off and gives it an ergonomic feel. Smooth-edged with a deep and wide shape, it can be used both as a serving dish and as a multi-purpose bowl. The Mabo plate demonstrates that upcycled material can be used to create a striking centrepiece.

Notes:
Color tone and pattern may vary due to the input material.
Each piece is unique and different to the others.

About the designer

ecoBirdy

ecoBirdy® In 2018 ecoBirdy launched its first collection of sustainable children’s furniture made from discarded plastic toys. Charlie Chair, Luisa Table, Rhino Lamp and Kiwi Container, along with a school programme and the story book “Journey to a New Life” were designed with an educational purpose in mind to get youngsters engaged with social and environmental responsibility. By transforming household plastic waste into inspiring furniture pieces, designer Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel have created a new standard that connects aesthetics and sustainability. From materi-al analysis to design concept and production process, the design duo are committed to making changes at all levels to achieve a smart solution to plastic waste, one that values our planet’s resources.

Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times. Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M. Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”. The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
