Relationships sometimes break down or fall apart. These can be romantic relationships, parent-child relationships, or friendships. They fall apart because one of the two people profoundly changes the way they engage with the world and, in the eyes of the other, becomes a stranger, an ALIEN—someone with whom it is no longer possible to share a journey of love or affection.
This project aims to represent, through a physical object, this painful and disorienting situation for those in the relationship who remain authentic and true to themselves.
The “Growing Apart” vase is a piece thrown on the wheel in the traditional Faenza ceramic style, glazed and decorated with small diamond patterns resembling the texture of fabric, then distorted and rendered asymmetrical.
One part remains true to its function as a vessel—a container for water or a vase—with a well-shaped and turned neck: this is the part that symbolizes the person who has remained true to themselves. The other, the distorted part, appears as a large, chipped mouth no longer connected to its other half but separated by a wall; instead of a vessel, it becomes a sponge that absorbs water.
