Based in Brittany, ceramic artist Valentine Benoist creates coastal ceramics ~ sculptural ceramic objects, using stoneware and materials foraged along the Breton coastline. Collected in situ, granite fragments, sand, seaweed ash or sea debris connect each piece to a place and a time, translating the landscape into works designed to inhabit space.
Working between vessel, sculpture and spatial object, her practice explores how matter carries memory. Imprints taken directly from rock formations, inclusions gathered at the tide line, and traces of organic material form a vocabulary that moves across scales, from collectible pieces to architectural applications.
Ever since she was a child, treasures picked on the shores of the Côtes-d'Armor have weighed down her pockets. Today, this personal collection feeds into a narrative and a sensitive ceramic practice. Her career, initially rooted in journalism and publishing in London, was built on observing chefs, producers, artisans and designers. This attentiveness continues to inform her relationship with the material: a focus on stories and gestures.
