Exceptional item crafted in Burgundy in collaboration with a basket weaver.
An aluminum block is machined engraved then framed with a strand of wicker.
Note that the mirror’s reflection is more like a reflector than a clear image.
________________
The reflectors take the shape of the wooden templates that allow basket weavers to manufacture basket bottoms in series. Here, the wood is replaced by the aluminum, featuring a groove along its edge that allows the basket weaver to weave a wicker band held in place by a binding. On the surface, the engraved spiral pattern follows the spiral movement of the wicker and disrupts the reflection. The reflector bounces light back and offers an interpretation of what lies before it. The mirror-polished finish of the aluminum is achieved during the machining process itself, without any additional polishing steps.
The wicker binding is repairable, extending the object’s lifespan.
