Description

Distressed Ivory Ikebana Vessel is a hand-thrown piece made from white stoneware with an elegant surface texture, white slip detail, torn edges, and lined with bronze. This intricate process begins with a cylinder thrown on the wheel from white clay. The surface layer is dried with a heat gun, a layer of white slip is applied, followed by sodium silicate. After undergoing another round of heat to dry the surface, the vessel is then shaped from the inside using one hand to push the walls out. This process breaks the dried layer of clay creating a delicate cracked texture over the body of the piece. After being thrown on the wheel the vessel is trimmed and then undergoes a process of intentional breakage to create a dynamic raw edge along the piece. The vessel undergoes two rounds of firing before completion.

Handmade in Northern Washington state

The surface of the vessel is left raw to highlight the beauty of the clay body used, the inside has been lined with a satin bronze glaze allowing the piece to hold water.

About Alex Roby Design Visit Showroom →

A multidisciplinary artist with a comprehensive background in art and design. Alexandria's first interaction with clay was in 2011 as an undergrad, which has evolved into a profound connection and is now her medium of choice to express her creative vision. Inspired by the organic textures and colors found within the natural world, she is fascinated by all the subtle details and nuances we tend to overlook. With a dedication to slow living and the art of noticing, she hopes her work can inspire others to reconnect, in a world that feels very disconnected. In her latest work, she explores the creation of a perfectly symmetrical piece, adding a distressed surface texture, then intentionally breaking away to give the piece raw edges and a weathered appearance. This act is liberating, to her symbolizing the destruction of the constraints of perfectionism that she has always felt bound by. As she continues with her experimentation, sustainability is at the forefront of her mind. She has begun working with wild clay found in the river behind her house and will continue to deepen her knowledge of the material. Striving to create her art solely from what the landscape provides. Her work will transmute through time, as she explores these new elements and techniques. The practice of working with a raw material from the earth has substantial grounding and therapeutic effects on the artist. When working with clay you have no choice but to become fully immersed. She hopes to be an inspiration to anyone in search of reconnection with themselves and the earth, to begin working with this healing medium.
