Inspired by an in-depth study of the forms and textures of granite rock, the Caldera SERIES reveals the hidden structures of matter, exploring subtle color variations and finishes with meticulous attention to detail. Crafted in paper pulp (papier-mâché) and wood, the sculpture invites not only to be seen but also to be touched and imagined, engaging the senses. The work reconstructs the essence of rock, faithfully replicating its magmatic and natural surface, creating a harmonious dialogue between material, light, and form.
This piece is composed of two rectangular papier-mâché panels joined vertically, forming a unified mineral surface subtly divided by a central seam. The pale, stone-like ground is textured and pigmented to evoke sedimentary density, with irregular granular areas concentrated along the lower edge, suggesting erosion or geological stratification. Incised linear geometries and shallow relief curves structure the surface, intersecting with a bold circular element in deep red positioned in the upper right quadrant—an abstract reference to a sun, a core, or a magmatic inclusion embedded within stone.
The sculpture is supported by a partial wenge wood frame, visible along the bottom and lateral edges. The dark, dense character of the wenge creates a strong visual contrast with the light mineral surface, functioning as both structural base and compositional anchor.
CALDERA N°3 – Papier-mâché and wenge wood. It measures 72.5 x 53.5 cm with a thickness of 3.5 cm.
